The Daily Philosophy Global Essay Contest 2024 is here!
We are excited to announce the Daily Philosophy Global Essay Contest 2024! This is a unique opportunity for you to engage with philosophical concepts and share your insights in a creative and impactful way. Everyone is invited to participate by submitting an essay: professional philosophers as well as philosophy students and the general public.
Themes & Topics
We welcome original essays of 2500-3500 words in length, in English, on the topic:
HOW CAN PHILOSOPHY HELP ENSURE THE FUTURE OF HUMANITY?
The essays must speak to an educated, yet not necessarily professional, audience. Daily Philosophy’s mission is to educate the public on the methods and topics of philosophy and how to apply well-known philosophical theories to one’s everyday life. The submitted essays must be unpublished and may not have been submitted elsewhere previously.
Deadline: September 1st, 2024, 23:59 GMT/UTC.
Send by email to dailyphilosophymag@gmail.com, subject: ENTRY 2024, and attach the document as a file. No links to online documents (e.g. Google docs or other) are accepted.
Participation is free. There is no submission fee for entries, but we request that you subscribe to the free, weekly Daily Philosophy newsletter before you submit an entry. You have to stay subscribed (for free) until the announcement of the results, if you want to stay in the contest, but you are free to quit your subscription afterwards.
The subscription just means that you will be receiving our weekly email with philosophy articles and news from the contest. We will never send you spam, and we won’t share your email address with anyone. We just need a way to easily contact all the participants.
Submission Details
- Exclusive Rights: By participating, you agree to grant Daily Philosophy the exclusive rights to publish your essay and related interviews across all our platforms and partner publications, including our YouTube channel, newsletter, podcast, and website, in perpetuity and in all languages (we may translate your entry and publish it on our partner publications – see the Daily Philosophy website for a list of partner publications).
- By submitting your essay, you state that you have all the rights to this article, that it has never been published in any form before, including on your own websites or social media.
- How to submit: Send your essay as an email attachment (!) in any common text format (plain text, Markdown, Word) to dailyphilosophymag@gmail.com, subject: ENTRY 2024. No links to online services are accepted, only attached files.
- All entries must begin with the full name and address of the author.
- Authors must be over 18 years of age.
- Participation is free, there is no submission fee for entries, but you need to be a subscriber to the free, weekly Daily Philosophy newsletter to be eligible to participate. You can subscribe for free here: https://dailyphilosophy.substack.com
- You are free to quit your subscription after the contest is over, but you need to be subscribed from the time you submit your entry until the announcement of the results.

- Lingnan University employees cannot participate in the contest.
- Deadline: All entries must be submitted by September 1st, 2024, 23:59 GMT/UTC. Remember, previously publicly accessible essays are ineligible and will lead to disqualification.
Judging Criteria

Content Quality: We’re looking for submissions that not only challenge the intellect but are also accessible and engaging to a broader audience. Your essay should serve to educate, bringing to light intriguing philosophical concepts or debates.

Creativity: We are looking for creative ideas and solutions to the present problems of humanity, utilising philosophy. You can choose which of these problems you want to address with your essay: whether it is climate change, AI, political structures, environmental degradation or any other topic that is related to the future survival of humanity. And don’t forget that the topic is about the contribution of philosophy. So an essay describing, say, the technology of carbon capture, would not fit the requirements.

Global and existential relevance: The world is not only your own country, so we encourage you to write on topics that are of global relevance and not limited to, say, US American politics. On the other hand, the topic is about the survival of humanity, so make sure that you address an issue that is of existential importance for all.

Engaging and original writing, AI use: We do not exclude AI-written essays (or essays written with AI assistance), but most such essays are not very interesting, they are usually bland and fail to make original arguments. You are welcome to use AI, particularly if you think that it can improve your English, but in the end we are looking for an essay that does not sound like AI, but a product of thought, originality and passion.

The essays will be judged by the editors of Daily Philosophy with the participation of the Daily Philosophy readership in a form that will be detailed later. The decision of the Daily Philosophy editors will be final.
Prizes
- First Prize: $200 USD, a certificate, an interview on Daily Philosophy, and publication of your essay and interview across our channels (the website, our weekly newsletter, YouTube channel and podcast).
- Second and Third Prizes: $100 USD, a certificate, an interview, and publication across our channels as above.
- Additional Prizes: Outstanding essays will be featured on the Daily Philosophy website, newsletter, podcast, and YouTube channel.
